These iconic figures have lasting connotations with the public; Morrissy intends to strip these ideas away. He combines the Icons with boring, absurd everyday imagery in order to distract from the ideas the viewer usually would associate with these characters. By taking the characters out of their historical and mythological context he redefines them. This allows the viewer to make a more honest and objective judgment of the subject. Morrissy intends to call into question our idea of right and wrong.

Working on a large scale Morrissy uses graphite and crayons to produce his work, a method offend looked upon as preparatory medium. This changes though as the work calls for it evident in his “Binary” Series which is produced with inkjet on paper.

Come see Morrissys large scale illustrations explore these controversial themes on Thursday the 22nd until Sunday the 25th.

The Exhibition Opening begins at 7pm and goes on until 11pm.
Entry is Free.

Monochrome

Feb 25th-27th

White Lady Art presents Kathrina Rupit’s first Irish solo show at Littlegreen Street Gallery. The show will highlight the talent of a new generation of street artists living in Ireland.

With urban art still firmly underground in Ireland’s cultural sub-strata, Kathrina is pioneering stencil art and unusual artistic materials, challenging traditional perceptions of technique, subject matter and style. With the launch of 2011’s “Roadworks” street art event came an attitude of forcing the public to view street art as more than just graffiti.

With a mind for Mexican history, in some of her pictures Kathrina has portrayed the “soldaderas” – women who fought in the Mexican Revolution. Ordinary people in extraordinary times, these women – rich and poor, educated and uneducated – would fight for their beliefs on the battlefields in their everyday clothes, armed to the teeth, sometimes with their children still on their backs. They have become the heroes of the Revolution, and are traditionally honoured by Mexican artists and literary figures. Kathrina is joining those ranks in her portraits of soldaderas, paying homage to the women of her country as many have done before her.

Kathrina Rupit is originally from Mexico City, and studied at the Universidad de Artes Visuales, N.L., Méx. While travelling around Europe looking for inspiration, Rupit mixes Mexican culture, society, and current issues, and injects her own opinion, sarcasm, and lines. She uses urban components to give her work a contemporary feel and to break with formalities. She uses experimental mediums such as tape, aerosols, cardboard, wood, stencils, markers, coffee, etc., to achieve this effect.

The show runs from Saturday 25th February until Tuesday 28th February and is sponsored by Tiger Beer. Art and beer, it’s a win win!

Denature

The Little Green Street Galley is proud to announce a group exhibition by emerging artists Sarah Doherty, Marie Farrington
and Mark Reynolds.
Denature presents work that negotiates the delicate space between the physical and the intangible and opens up new lines of inquiry into the nature of the real. Through a range of processes, a problematic detachment is proposed which embeds the work in unfamiliarity and impossibility. Denature seeks to disrupt common systems and impose upon them the possibility for new dialogues and alternative modes of interpretation. Through the translations and transformations initiated, an exchange occurs between object and substance, between form and material that positions the work on a liminal plane, traversing the many structures that inform the physical.

Wreck art collective

Little Green Street Gallery will host its first show of the year, this Thursday the 2nd of February. The show in questions is the Wreck Art Collective, a collective of young, emerging artists using the gallery as platform to showcase and promote their exciting work. Selected artists come from a variety of practices and creative backgrounds contributing to Wreck’s diverse and contemporary nature.

The collective was created by fine artist Leanne Mc Cullagh and photographer Holly Cullen. Leanne is a recent fine art graduate from Limerick School of Art & Design and Holly, who is a recent graduate of Photography, who’s practices lay mainly in fashion and creative photography.

Having worked together on previous artistic projects, they pair formed Wreck Art Collective with the aim of creating edgy, accessible exhibitions together with exciting new artists.

Opening night will take place on Thursday the 2nd of Feb at 7.30pm and the show will continue until Thursday the 9th of Feb.

||RESTRICTED ACCESS|| An exhibition created and curated by Scene...

||RESTRICTED ACCESS|| An exhibition created and curated by Scene Not Herd

Duration: 1 – 4th Dec

Performing on the night are The Stoney Brokes http://www.facebook.com/thestoneybrokes

This exhibition presents individual expressions presented by a number of Scene Not Herd members.
Collectively, ||RESTRICTED ACCESS|| explores the path, journey, maze, crossroads that Scene Not Herd, as 15 – 19 year olds, are facing as they enter a world of choices where decisions need to be made as to the what path to take.
This exhibition explores the notion of restrictions that are often confronted by people in this age-group.
November 2011.

The exhibition is a collaborative result of a group of 25 artists in the Dublin 2 area. They have come together to stimulate and entice the public with over 70 tantalising pieces of artwork.

The group formed in early May after signing up for two courses run by internationally acclaimed author and illustrator Adrienne Geoghegan and the group decided to exhibit some of their work to date.

What viewers will find is an inspiring and delightful collection of illustrations from some of the county’s budding artists. Many of the participants have a background in art be it graphics, textiles or fine art. Others just have a deep rooted love for all things creative.

The exhibition is taking place in the Little Green Gallery in Capel Street from 17th – 30th November 2011, and is open to everyone, so come along to the opening night this Thursday at 730pm

The History of the Reggae Movement
The Reggae Movement...

The History of the Reggae Movement

The Reggae Movement Exhibition follows the story of the sound system. The sound system is at the heart of the reggae movement, the movement which gave birth to ska, rocksteady, reggae, dub, dancehall, hip-hop, jungle and drum and bass and taught nations and generations how to dance.Poster Fish Promotions presents The Reggae Movement Exhibition at Little Green Street Gallery this Wednesday to Sunday.

Freda Hughes of Poster Fish Promotions is excited to have the event here in Dublin and says, “Poster Fish Promotions jumped at the opportunity to bring the exhibition to Ireland. Any chance to merge music, art, film and literature is right up our street and this exhibition chronicles a hugely important phenomenon in music history.”

The exhibition follows the growth of sound system culture from 1950’s Kingston across Jamaica, to the UK and then to Europe and features Jamaican artist Micheal Thompson, aka Freestylee illustrating part of the story.

When asked in a recent interview why he called it a reggae movement, rather than say a scene Thompson aptly replied, “Reggae is a movement, it’s one of the new styles of music that came out of the 20th century, but it’s still evolving and there’s a phenomenal back catalogue of reggae music, especially from the 1970s, that is still being discovered or uncovered. I think there was something special that happened in Jamaica and reggae and sound system culture in particular has had a huge influence on modern music…”

Additional artwork is by Mau Mau and Ronan Lynch provides the text. Lynch is a historian of music who has written widely about reggae, politics and culture. He also calls the shots as editor of Irie Up magazine. Designing the show is graphic designer, Paula Strzelecka who also works as photo editor with the magazine.

Following runs in Berlin and Amsterdam, the Dublin show will run from Wednesday 9th to Sunday 13th November, at the Gallery. Poster Fish Promotion’s Freda also adds, “Reggae music in Ireland is one of the few genres that brings people from the punk, skin-head, ska, mod, dancehall, electronic and dub scenes, as well as people of all ages, together frequently. The line up at our fundraiser gig for this exhibition really mirrors that. We hope that people from all walks of life will come and check out the many events taking place as part of The Reggae Movement Exhibition this week at Little Green Street Gallery.”

There are several evening events planned to run in conjunction with this exhibition, including the Irish premiere of the film Holding On To Jah on Thursday. Full details are available at www.thereggaemovement.com so there’s no excuse!

Art Swap

October 7th-14th, 2011.

‘10 Missed Calls & The Robot’s Bones’. A showcase of work by artists DMC and VERZ which opens with a LIVE PAINT on FRI 7TH OCTOBER 2011 at 7.30PM.

The Exhibition will run for one week only. Both artists DMC and VERZ are based in Belfast, Northern Ireland and have recently unleashed a little of their creativity onto the streets of Dublin. This recent affair with the city has inspired this new body of unseen work and Little Green Street Gallery will help share it.

DMC’s artwork will look at an ongoing series of Missed-Call Girls, these dark and floating female characters are heartbroken from an unfortunate unanswered call. Painted loosely with sprays and brushwork he tries to capture that energy of a girl dealing with a redundant heart.

VERZ looks inside the machine and doesn’t like what he sees, recession, greed, racism and religious intolerance whilst Carrion crows stand picking at the bones of Boom. VERZ’s Ireland is a dark, satirical world devoid of emerald hills and arran knitwear.

The show will open with a live paint, Dj and refreshments. There will be original canvas, framed originals and unframed limited edition prints on show from both DMC and VERZ.

The Lookers-An arts collective

Doodling his way through the schooling system danleo went on to study Animation and Graphic design. He has spent the last few years painting murals, both on a commission basis but more importantly for fun. Most of his recent work has been centered on the idea of harmony between species and ancient beliefs so, danleo takes a lot of influence from foreign cultures and ideas that may no longer be in practice. In terms of technique danleo tries to produce pieces that are clean, bold and colourful using spray paint but applying with a brush. The aim is to create works that look as if they were created using vector software but have been painted by hand. “Inspiration can come from anywhere and anything; however I owe a lot to the cartoons and comic books of the early nineties as these where the things that led me in this direction.”

A Beret Will Be Fine is an exhibition of emerging photographers within the second year of DIT’s BA in Photography program who just wish to get things done. Taking things into your own hands is an important trait for anyone wishing to make a name for themselves in this current climate. We are not people who are just going to sit around and wait for opportunities to fall in our laps. We are people who create them. The exhibition title refers to a quote from internet podcast authority and productivity guru, Merlin Mann:

“The actual making of stuff, ends up being a fairly tedious process, a tedious lonely non-beret wearing process, and I’m not saying that in a mean way, I hope I’m saying that in a hopeful way, because as hard as it is, and I’m not talking about me here, I’m talking about real people who make stuff, as hard as it is to get great at making stuff over and over again, there is something oddly freeing about saying “Well no there is not a genie and there is not a muse” and yes it will take you more than four hours a week and you can’t do it in a hammock. You’re going to actually have to get up early and work. No one in India will do this for you. You’re going to have to go out and really work on this stuff … if it matters to you. And if it doesn’t matter to you then a beret will be fine.”

We take this quote as a representation of the day-to-day process of going to college and putting in the time and attention needed to create fulfilling work. This exhibition is a showcase of the best of that work.

Exhibiting are second year students of DIT’s BA in Photography programme. Photographers include: Andrina Baker, Ryan Byrne, Kristina Collender, Emmett Connell, Efa Corwell, Elina Dimante, Neil Dorgan, Jonathan Higgins, Kasia Kaminska, Feena Kavanagh, Barry Keogh, Robert McCormack, Deirdre McGing, Claire Meagh, Bobi Murray, Rosie Nixon, Adele O’Byrne, Nikki O’Carroll, Treasa O’Hanlon, Catherine O’Toole, Maciej Pestka, Alex Sinclair, Irene Siragusa.

Illustrate my world.
